Flight security starts on the ground. As air traffic volumes increase, airport operations are also growing in complexity to cope with them. More and larger aircraft, an increase in ground support equipment, frequent construction work, and the need for faster turnaround times all pose challenges to operational safety.

Modeled on the successful IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) program, the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) establishes the first internationally recognized standards for improving safety and reducing ground damage. When an audit shows that a ground service provider has implemented a compliant system, it is entered in the ISAGO Registry and awarded a corresponding certificate. Fraport AG has now received ISAGO certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for its ground handling services.ISAGO offers benefits to airlines, ground handlers, and both regulatory and airport authorities. It introduces a uniform set of audit standards that are recognized by all parties, with the goal of improving safety and diminishing the risk of accidents, incidents and injuries on the ground.

In the fall of 2011, United Airlines – acting as an ISAGO auditor – spent three days meticulously auditing Fraport AG’s Ground Handling services at Frankfurt Airport. The documentation and implementation of the following activities were evaluated: organization & management, load control, passenger handling, baggage handling, aircraft handling and loading, and aircraft ground movements. Occupational safety and security have top priority. In order to be listed in the ISAGO registry, the relevant processes must be documented and implemented in accordance with extremely strict requirements. ISAGO registration onfirms that the Ground Handling Services of Fraport AG comply with international standards.

The successful passing of this ISAGO audit marks a major milestone for Fraport AG. The audit will be repeated every two years, which obliges Frankfurt Airport’s operator to uphold and continually improve the high quality of the services it provides to its customers.
